Though modern AC units are getting more durable, they don’t last forever. On average, you can expect your AC unit to last 10 to 20 years.

If you’re buying a new unit, there are a few things you can do to increase its lifespan. One of them is to install it properly. Otherwise, the added strain on the unit’s parts may lead to another quick replacement.

1. Remove the Current Unit

First things first: go through safety procedures before removing your old AC unit. This includes turning off the gas supply and placing floor protection. Then, use a specialized recovery machine to get rid of any refrigerant.

Next, turn off the circuit breakers. This will allow you to remove the disconnect box, its whip, and the rest of the condenser unit.

2. Prepare the Area for Installation

Before proceeding with the Port Charlotte AC installation, you’ll need to prepare the area. Start by fitting a new base and pad for the condenser. You may need to do some digging or apply gravel to level the ground.

You should also place a composite pad over the concrete one. A composite pad will absorb the unit’s vibrations, reducing noise. Plus, it makes it easier to move the condenser if there’s a need for North Port AC repair.

3. Remove Old Coils and Lines

Your next step is to remove the indoor evaporator coil. You’ll see it above the furnace, connected to the copper refrigerant lines. An evaporator coil can be either cased or uncased, but the removal process is the same.

You’ll also need to remove the refrigerant lines. Undo the straps holding them to the floor joists, then take them out. If you can’t remove all existing refrigerant lines, you’ll need to install the new ones elsewhere.

4. Install New Coils and Lines

Ideally, you should get cased evaporator coils for your new AC unit. These coils come ready to install, making the process easier. All you’ll need to do is connect them to the sheet metal plenum from your old unit.

When installing new copper refrigerant lines, don’t bend them unless necessary. In general, you should secure them every four to six feet. Invest in line protection to avoid needless Port Charlotte AC repair down the road.

5. Install the New Unit

Set up your new unit on the pad and connect its service valves to the refrigerant lines. Then, install a liquid line filter dryer near the expansion valve. Once that’s done, connect it to the refrigerant system.

Finally, install the new disconnect box and whip. For best results, use a fused disconnect box for extra overcurrent protection.
