The days are getting longer and the temperatures are rising. This means one thing: Summer is almost here!

Is your AC ready?

This isn’t the season to suddenly discover your unit isn’t working. If your AC is not turning on, it’s important to address the culprit quickly so you can enjoy these next few months in comfort!

Today, we’re sharing a few reasons why this might be happening, and what you can do about it.

1. Tripped Circut Breaker

If you’re experiencing AC issues, try checking your circuit breaker. If it was overloaded, then it could have tripped. Old, outdated appliances could also draw too much power and cause the same reaction.

Once you locate the panel and reset it, see if that solves the issue. If the system still doesn’t turn on, it’s best to call your local AC technician to diagnose the problem.

2. Clogged Air Filter

You know you’re supposed to change the filter in your home on a regular basis. It’s a routine homeowner task. However, studies show that 82% of Americans skip this chore on a monthly basis.

If yours is clogged, it could prevent optimal airflow within your AC system. When this happens, any humidity that the unit absorbs from your home could freeze on the coils, instead of draining properly. This could prevent your AC system from turning on and operating as expected.

3. Blown Fuse

Are the fuses in your AC unit working properly? You’ll need a special tool called a multimeter to find out.

If you have one at home, you can test both fuses. A beeping sound means the fuse is working properly. If you don’t have access to a multimeter, your AC technician can perform this test for you. Replacement fuses are inexpensive but can make a major difference.

4. Clogged Condenser Line

Just like air filters, condenser lines can also get clogged and dirty. Not only are they susceptible to mold, but they’re just big enough to invite little critters inside.

It’s possible to clean these lines at home, but the process is intricate and requires turning off the power. It’s safest to allow an experienced professional to take the reins.

5. Shut-Off Switches Need Adjustment

There is an indoor shut-off switch for your AC unit, as well as an outdoor one. Both of these must be in the “on” position for the system to work.

First, check the indoor switch near your indoor air handler unit and ensure it’s turned on. Then, locate the switch next to the outdoor unit and perform the same check. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are right under your nose!

AC Is Not Turning On: Time to Call the Pros

If your AC is not turning on, then there could be a more serious issue at work than the five issues above. For instance, the problem could be a refrigerant leak, faulty motor, or a wiring issue in your home.

While there are some DIY repairs you can tackle on your own, we always recommend asking an experienced team of AC experts to diagnose and repair any issues you encounter. If you’re ready to stay cool and comfortable this summer, go ahead and give us a call.
