Looking for a brand new heating system in the middle of winter would be a pretty desperate move elsewhere in the country. Fortunately, in Florida the weather is forgiving enough that it’s usually not a big deal. Still, you probably don’t want to be without heat in your home for too long. Before you rush to install the same kind of system you had before, though, you should consider the advantages of some of the other options on the market. Like, for example, a heat pump system.

What a Heat Pump System Does

A heat pump looks like an air conditioner, at first glance. Two linked units make up the system, one installed inside and one outside. The two evaporate and condense refrigerant to move heat back and forth between them during operation, just as an air conditioner does. The big difference, though, is that a heat pump system includes a part called the reversing valve. The reversing valve is what allows the heat pump to reverse the direction that refrigerant flows through it, enabling it to alternate between heating and air conditioning functions.

The Benefits of Installing a Heat Pump

Heat pumps have a lot of advantages to offer those who install them. The ability to offer both heating and air conditioning functions is a major part of why people tend to install heat pump systems. This is both for the sake of saving money and space that would otherwise go to another system. Heat pumps are almost always installed for the purposes of energy efficiency, and pay for themselves in savings within the first few years of installation.

Part of the reason that heat pumps are so energy efficient is that they don’t have to burn any kind of fuel to generate heat. Instead, they absorb ambient thermal energy from the air around the outside heat pump unit. The thermal energy is then vented into the home through the internal unit to heat it. This substantially cuts down on heating costs from month to month. It also makes it a good choice for areas where the lack of natural gas lines makes installing a gas-based system impossible.

Maintaining Your Heat Pump

Just as with any heating system, the best way to get the maximum return on investment for your heat pump is to schedule preventive maintenance. Unlike most heating systems, which only need maintenance once a year, you should schedule maintenance for your heat pump during both spring and fall. This is because heat pumps are used all year round, which means that they accumulate twice as much wear and tear as other systems. As with all heating systems, you should also call for repairs as soon as you notice any problems with your heat pump. The faster you get it repaired, the better off it will be.
