Ductless systems have many unique advantages to offer over traditional systems, but that doesn’t make them perfect. If you’re using a ductless system to keep warm this winter, you should keep an eye out for a number of indications that the system is having problems. The faster that you call for repairs, the faster the problem can be dealt with and the more damage to your system is prevented. Let’s take a look at some issues you should watch for.
Stuck in Cooling Mode
Ductless systems can switch between heating and cooling modes using a part called the reversing valve. This valve controls the directional flow of refrigerant in the system. If your system seems to be stuck in cooling mode, it is likely that the reversing valve is in need of repairs.
Loss of Output
Loss of output from your ductless system could be due to a number of different things. If the loss of output is accompanied by a strange hissing or gurgling sound, it is likely that you have a leak in your refrigerant line. Refrigerant is the lifeblood of a ductless system, without which the unit wouldn’t be able to heat or cool your home. If the leak isn’t found and fixed, your system will eventually break down. Shut down the system and call for repairs as soon as you notice this.
Hot or Cold Spots
Hot and cold spots, especially when localized to one room, likely indicate a problem with the unit in that room. You may need to have the thermostat repaired, or there may be a problem with the air handler. You’ll need to have the system professionally examined to know for certain.
