If you’re in the market for a new heating system, you have quite a few options available to you. Each of these has its own set of advantages to offer, but that doesn’t mean that each is ideally suited to every situation. If you’re trying to decide if a ductless mini split system is right for you, there are a couple of things you should know. Let’s take a look at those things now.

What Is a Ductless System?

A ductless mini split system is a type of heat pump, which means that it doesn’t burn fuel to generate heat. Rather, it evaporates and condenses refrigerant to move heat from one place to another. One ductless unit is installed in each room that requires heating, with up to four indoor units connected to a single outdoor condenser coil. Each ductless unit has its own thermostat, and can operate independently from the other units. Like all heat pump systems, a ductless system can reverse its refrigerant flow to act as either a heater or air conditioner.

Pros

There are a number of different pros to using a ductless mini split system. Most people install them for the same reason all heat pumps are popular: the ability to offer both heating and cooling functions. This saves a lot of money and space, compared to the standard two-system configuration that most homes use. Ductless systems also save money on heating because they don’t have to burn fuel. A system will often pay for itself in savings within a few years of installation.

Unlike central heat pump systems, ductless mini splits offer the additional benefit of control over each individual room’s climate in the home. This prevents wasting energy on rooms that are unoccupied and allows everyone in the home to set their own ideal temperature without bothering the rest of the household.

Cons

Although ductless mini splits do have a lot to offer, there are a couple of things you should know about them before installing one. First, installing a ductless mini split system does take a bit of construction work. The units need to be installed in each room and connected to the coil outside. Most homes are not already outfitted for this kind of system, so the installation will be a bit more involved.

Second, ductless mini splits cannot condition the entire house. If you want to have a ductless mini split in more than four rooms in your home, you’re going to need to install a second outdoor unit. Make sure that you want to do that before you invest in the first one. You don’t want to have the entire system installed, and then be disappointed that it can’t offer as much coverage as you need.
