Summer is here, and along with it comes the season of air conditioner problems. The summer season is when people tend to use their air conditioners the most, which of course means that it is also the season when things are most likely to go wrong. If you want to be able to react quickly to air conditioner problems, you need to know what to look for. Let’s examine some of the more common air conditioner problems you might see this summer.

Ice

You may think that air conditioner ice is a sign that the system is producing a lot of cold air, which is what it’s supposed to be doing. Unfortunately, this is actually a sign that the system is in serious trouble. Air conditioner ice forms when the flow of warm air from the ducts to the evaporator coil is cut off. This causes the temperature around the evaporator coil to drop below freezing, which will cause it to ice over. If the ice isn’t removed, the weight of it can warp the coil and require its replacement. The system will also be unable to absorb heat as long as the coil is covered in ice.

Refrigerant Leaks

An air conditioner never consumes refrigerant. It simply recycles refrigerant back and forth between liquid and gaseous states in order to remove heat from the home. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid it needs to operate properly. This will cause a steady decline in output, followed by an eventual breakdown. Call for repairs right away if you notice fluid dripping from your air conditioner.
